Are You Satisfied with Your Current Measuring Microscope?
-Measuring Microscope MF-J Series
Measuring microscopes are invaluable tools in quality control, providing both ease of use and high accuracy. However, a common challenge is that dimension readings to 1/100 mm can vary depending on the operator's technique. Is this an issue you encounter?
We propose a measurement method that minimizes variations while maintaining your current inspection processes.
Factors that Cause Measurement Errors
Variability in crosshair alignment positions due to operator differences.
Variability in focusing techniques among operators.
Unstable installation of the measurement object when it does not fit properly on the stage.
Voices from the Field: What We Hear
The need to measure using imaginary points, such as intersection points or the center of a circle.
A desire to eliminate manual entry of measurement results.
The ability to discuss measurement points collaboratively while multiple people view them simultaneously.
Measures to Address Variations in Measurement Points
Obtaining measurement points using a crosshair can result in inconsistencies, such as measuring at the end of a line or at its center, leading to variations depending on the operator.
Three key measures can address this issue:
・Improve and standardize inspection skills through training and defined work procedures.
・Enhance edge visibility at measurement points using optimal lighting.
・Minimize individual error by leveraging automatic acquisition through image measurement functionality.
Mitutoyo's image measurement function simplifies the process of obtaining accurate measurement points, significantly reducing variations.
*For increased certainty in measurement accuracy, the MF series is recommended, delivering precision that approaches JIS 0 grade.
Countermeasures for Uneven Focus
Differences in edge appearance caused by inconsistent focusing can result in measurement errors. Since focusing is often subjective, variations between operators are inevitable.
There are two main countermeasures:
・Increase the magnification of the objective lens to narrow the focus range.
・Utilize the autofocus (AF) function for consistent focus.
Measures to Prevent Errors from Improper Fitting of Measurement Objects
When a measurement object does not fit on the stage, its fixation becomes unstable, resulting in measurement errors.
Two key measures can address this issue:
・Examine the object before assembly and cut it to a size that fits the stage.
・Replace the current system with a measuring microscope equipped with a larger stage.
Mitutoyo offers a wide range of microscopes designed to accommodate larger objects without the need for cutting:
*XY direction: up to 400 x 200 mm
*Z direction: up to 220 mm
Voices from the Field: What We Hear
Uniaxial measurement using a counter has inherent limitations.
Two main countermeasures can address this issue:
・Install a compact computational unit.
・Install a personal computer processor.
Mitutoyo's personal computer processor meets a wide range of needs:
・Enables oblique measurements, eliminating the need for troublesome parallel work.
・Supports various measurement patterns, including those using virtual points and angles.
・Eliminates the need for manual data entry, allowing for smooth creation of inspection reports.
・Provides guided measurement procedures, ensuring ease of operation even with numerous measurement points.
